The Paddock Sedge Fen



Located centrally in East Anglia The Paddock is within easy reach of the historic towns, cities, and attractions of the region. Just 20 Minutes from a day at the races in Newmarket or a little over an hour by train to London, makes it a great base to return to after a day exploring East Anglia, or a quiet haven to unwind and take in the local wildlife.

7 Hook-ups are available on site. With mature, thick hedges on the west and south sides, giving shelter from the prevailing winds, and willows to the east there is plenty of cover for the 25 varieties of birds, at least, on site.The Paddock is a member only Camping and Caravanning Club certificated site, Please click on their logo on the right for more information.

Hobby and Marsh harrier are frequently visible from the site. A 3 mile walk will take you to the Golden oriole and, if you're fortunate, you might get a glimpse of the Cranes as you go. Cuckoos can be heard and sometimes seen from the Camp Site, Bittern are frequently heard booming from the reed beds near by and Reed warbler can be heard and sometimes seen in the reeds growing in the drain bordering the site. Nightingale, Cetti’s Warbler, grasshopper warbler, whitethroat, tree creepers, Greater spotted woodpecker, Green woodpecker, tree sparrow, King fisher and lots more can usually be heard, and with patience, seen within a 5 minute stroll from the Camp Site. Hut There is opportunity for walking in the area, mostly using farm tracks which are not designated public footpaths but which sensible walkers are welcome to use
The nearby public footpath, a few minutes away from the site, takes you either to the village of Lakenheath (about 3 miles) or to a footpath which runs through the RSPB Lakenheath Fen reserve at Botany Bay and onto the Hereward Way long distance walk, which links Oakham to Harling Road Station in Norfolk and passes along the northern edge of Lakenheath Fen reserve.

Although there is no age limit, please note that the site is not child friendly. There are no facilities for games or play, and there is a typical fenland dyke close by - deep, muddy, steep-sided and dangerous for the young and inexperienced.


    The military Air force bases at Lakenheath and Mildenhall are far enough away not to be obtrusive but close enough to visit the viewing areas. Sometimes planes from Lakenheath can provide dramatic, if noisy, entertainment for short periods during the day and serve to emphasise the quietness of the site. Places to go

   The area is well known for fishing and day tickets are available on local lakes and rivers. A number of nature reserves are also in the area. The Visitor Centre for Lakenheath Fen RSPB reserve is a must for bird watchers, as the reserve boasts several kinds of rare birds and information is available there as to the best places to spot these birds. Other nature/bird reserves or country parks are within easy reach.

Directions

From Lakenheath, take the turning signposted "Sedge Fen", (in the High Street). Follow the signs to the Sedge Fen Baptist Church (Looks like a house). At the corner near the church, turn right so that you pass the church on your left.  Follow the single track road round a sharp left hand bend (about half a mile) to The Paddock. The entrance to the site is straight in front of you. If travelling from the A1101 Littleport/Mildenhall road, follow signs to Sedge Fen Baptist Church - the turning is 1 mile south of Shippea Hill railway station.
If you are approaching on the A11 from Newmarket/Cambridge it would be advisable, at busy times, to leave the dual carriageway at Red Lodge, Leave the dual carriageway via the slip road, turn right, then left at the roundabout following the signs to Worlington. Then turn right at the T junction heading for Mildenhall, joining the A1101 at the mini roundabout in Mildenhall and head towards Littleport. At the roundabout at the end of RAF Mildenhall you can either take the Littleport road or go right for Lakenheath.
The B1112 from Icklingham to Eriswell is open again and Work is complete on the A11 Fiveways roundabout (Mildenhall) to Thetford improvements.
